  2. There are few things as useless as a broken umbrella. I can feel the frustration of the owner who discarded it.

Julie and I were in New York City a few years ago on a January weekend with rain and very high winds. As we walked back to our hotel from the theater, we passed dozens of discarded umbrellas, and we still refer to our trip as the New York visit with "the night of the broken umbrellas."

Thank you for your new year's greeting on my site, and I extend my best wishes to you and yours. I look forward to more of your wonderful photos of a great city.

  3. Could we interpret this as a symbol of the economic future...the wind is blowing away the troubles, the gray days and rain have passed and the future looks bright...am I just grasping at umbrella ribs?

  5. Fabulous shot! Not much you can do with an umbrella after that happens.

  6. The umbrella picture is worth the proverbial thousand words. I have been appreciating your good eye for photos and am adding you to my favorite blog list if that's ok. You do good work.

  8. I really wish someone will be able to produce an umbrella that will survive some bad weather!

  10. A trick worth trying if this happens to you is to turn around and head into the wind so that the brolly flips right side out again! I have saved many a brolly this
    way for another day.

  11. I'm sorry I don't get around to leaving comments very much (something I say too often, to too many of our colleagues), but I love this picture. It makes me think of a satellite dish that should be out in the desert, looking for extraterrestrial signals.

  12. That's a pretty common sight here in Seattle, too. I'm surprised people simply abandon umbrellas, though. I'd take it home and attempt a fix. But then I'm a little pinchy -:)

  15. Great idea, many of these even here with this weather!

  16. New York City is littered with these after a rainstorm. Mostly a function of emergency purchases of cheap umbrellas on the street.
