Sledding on the Common
Thursday, January 27, 2011

I took this photo a couple of days ago, but after 10 more inches of snow last night kids will be sledding for many days to come.
Acorn Street: Winter
Tuesday, January 25, 2011

Acorn Street is the quintessential Beacon Hill street. It is not usually shown in winter, because you cannot see its cobblestones.
Literary reflections
Saturday, January 22, 2011

A photo of one of the exhibit rooms at the Boston Public Library. This photo was taken last March and is a change from all the wintry pictures I've been posting of late. It's about 20 degrees Fahrenheit (-7 degrees centigrade) here and a good day to stay indoors with a good book or movie.
Boston Common Gates

View looking up the Beacon Street Mall of the Boston Common on a snowy day last week. The scene is the same today as we got blanketed by more snow last night and are headed for a deep freeze over the next few days. Here is another photo of the Mall on a March day two years ago, viewed from a different perspective.

Sumner in Winter

Statue of Charles Sumner in the Public Garden. Sumner was a leader of the anti-slavery movement in Boston and served in Congress during the Civil War.
Park animals
Saturday, January 15, 2011

Sometimes the animals in the park are so cute you have to stop and watch, like the two women above watching the antics of the squirrels on the tree yesterday. Sometimes the animals remind us of their harsh reality; some are not so lucky and become food for the swifter.
Hawks nest in some of the taller buildings in the city. I have on occasion seen one or two flying above, but never one on the ground. This one didn't stay long with his catch; he was attracting too much attention and took his food to go.
Skywatch Friday
Friday, January 14, 2011
Recent snow has made the city look like a winter wonderland. View other Skywatch Friday photos.
Central Burying Ground
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
View of the Central Burying Ground on Boston Common, established in 1754. A sign near this gate says no dogs allowed, but I for one would like to have dogs running around and having fun near where I'm buried.
The sign at the entrance gate here is for William Billings, a Boston born composer considered the father of American Choral music who is thought to be buried here in an unmarked grave.
Coffee Bar
Tuesday, January 4, 2011

I found a new coffee shop (for me anyway) on Washington Street and took this while sitting down and enjoying a cup of my new favorite coffee.
Theme Day: Best Picture of 2010
Saturday, January 1, 2011
Designed by Maya Lin in 1981, the walls of the memorial have a mirror-like surface of polished black granite reflecting images of the visitors and surrounding monuments, trees and clouds. The names of all the dead and missing are engraved on its walls.
