Filene's of Boston

The old Filene's department store in downtown Boston. The facade on the Summer St., designed by noted architect Daniel Burnham, was retained.

Panoramic view of the old building that was razed and is being built, literally, from the ground up.

  1. This is a shocker. I spent eight years working down Franklin Street from Filenes. Every now and then I have wondered what has happened to the Summer Street end of the street.

I didn't know that Burnham designed Filenes. You probably know that he was featured in the book The Devil in the White City, with one of the plots following Burnham's struggle to get the World Fair completed in time.

Nice to see a post from you.

  2. Looking at the photo of this large hole is a little upsetting. I'm glad that I had the privilege of living in Boston for 3 years when Filene's was still a vibrant store.

  3. Maybe people said the same when the old buildings were pulled down to build this one - 'plus ca change ...'
