Massachusetts State House
The golden dome of the Massachusetts State House glitters even in Black & White. The sky was so dramatic I couldn't resist taking such a touristy shot of the state house.

Charles Street Jail
The Charles Street Jail was closed in 1990 and acquired by neighboring Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH). The X-shaped jail building has been totally renovated and re-christened as the luxury four star Liberty Hotel. The Jail's historical facade of gray Quincy Granite has been kept and a few of the original jail cells have also been restored and are supposed to be on view in the hotel lobby area. Enlarge the photo and you will see that bars on the window have been kept to enhance the flavor of the original building. How Disneyesque of the developers. Spend a night in Jail with bars on the windows, all for only about $400 a night.

Going Nowhere
This stairway is on Mr. Vernon Street on Beacon Hill (near the intersection of Joy Street). I wonder what happened to the doorway and why it was bricked up; but more importantly, why the granite stairs and railing were not removed too.

Hooker Statue at Mass. State House

Civil War General Joseph Hooker of Massachusetts. This equestrian statue adorns the front entrance of the State House.
Here is a picture of the general done by Matthew Brady's studio.

Digging up Charles Street

This is a picture I took yesterday on Charles Street. I thought it was interesting because it provides some color on a drab and overcast day and showed five workers standing around while the one man in the hole (unseen from this angle) was the only worker doing work at this moment. And there are two policemen on detail; why two when all you need is one supervise.

State House Viewed from Boston Common

Here is another view of the State House, taken from the Boston Common yesterday. Winter has been mild but now that Spring is coming (today at about 8:00PM) winter doesn't seem to want to let go and has been giving us some snow to contend with the last couple of weeks.

Massachusetts State House
Picture of the State House from Beacon Street.
Designed by Charles Bulfinch, the State House sits on the south side of Beacon Hill, overlooking Boston Common and the Back Bay. The dome was coppered by Paul Revere & Sons in 1802 and was gilded for the first time in the early 1870s with 23 carat gold leaf for a cost of $2862.50; the most recent gilding, in 1997, cost $300,000.
