Before the Ocean Plunge

Somewhat warm and relaxed before the ocean plunge the week before last in Quincy for the John Hancock Birthday Plunge are Greg McMillen, Terry McMillen, Marie McDonald, and Erin McMillen. The girls are wearing the lobster headgear to advocate giving up eating lobsters. The January ocean plunge raises money for local charities and is a really fun event. Some of the swimmers, shown below, after the plunge coming out of the water was originally shown on Quincy Daily Photo.

Robert Gould Shaw and the Massachusetts Fifty-fourth Regiment

Side view of the Robert Gould Shaw Monument by Augustus Saint-Gaudens. This relief monument built in 1897 in honor of the Massachusetts 54th Regiment is considered by many to be among the best sculptural works of the 19th century.

The 54th was the first all-Black regiment recruited in the North to fight for the Union army during the Civil War. The monument is part of the Boston Black Heritage Trail. A famous composition by Charles Ives, "Col. Shaw and his Colored Regiment," the opening movement of Three Places in New England, is based both on this monument and the regiment.

Below is a picture I took last year:

Falling Ice

One of the hazards of living or working in the city in winter is the risk of getting hit by falling ice. I don't remember seeing signs like this years ago. My guess is that lawyers must be telling building owners and managers to put out warning signs to limit their liability in case of any injuries. I wonder if anyone has been injured walking into, or tripping over, such a sign and sued the building for negligence?

Haffenreffer Walk

Named after Jamaica Plain beer baron Theodore H. Haffenreffer (l880-1956). His presence on the Park Commission from 1930 to 1956 resulted in granite tablets placed by the main gates of the Boston Public Garden. The connecting pathway over the lagoon bridge was dubbed "Haffenreffer Walk" during the administration of John Hynes in the late 1950's. The tablets' last lines proclaim Haffenreffer's "Lifetime of dedicated service to his native city," a rare tribute to the many, many German immigrants who have passed through the City of Boston.

Boston Common at Night

This is a view of Boston Common from Beacon Street looking towards the Park Street Church (spire in the background). This photo is due to the prompting of Chuck in Seattle who asked for a winter picture of Park Street. I couldn't post the same scene, so I settled on one that shows some of the Holiday lights on the Common trees and "sort of, almost" satisfies Chuck's request.

Park Street

View looking down Park Street toward Tremont Street. Park Street begins at the top of Beacon Hill, at the intersection of Beacon Street, where it is lined up with the front of the Massachusetts State House. It borders the Boston Common on the right (west). This is the view looking up Park Street.
