This isn't really a doorway, but three archways near the door to the Old South Church on Boylston Street. I liked the wreaths and colorful banners and thought this was a good picture to end 2008. Happy New Year!

Two of the riders in the Wassail Parade through the center of Woodstock, Vermnt. The parade had over fifty horses (two goats) and riders dressed in holiday costumes and period dress from the early 19th Century.

The Harvard Bridge (also known locally as the "M.I.T. bridge" or the "Mass. Ave. bridge") carries Massachusetts Avenue (Route 2A) from Back Bay, Boston to Cambridge and is the longest bridge over the Charles River.

Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument

A Civil War Monument in the Boston Common. The monument stands 72 feet tall, or 22 meters. The total cost of the monument was 110,000 in 1877 and was funded by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

The column is topped by a figure representing the Genius of America. Four statues at the base represent Peace, the Sailor, the Muse of History, and the Soldier. Bas-relief plaques depict the departure and return of the forces, the Navy, and the work of the Boston Sanitary Commission. In one plaque, Longfellow can be seen accompanying the governor. The figures at the base of the column represent the sections of the country: North, South, East, and West.

Barren landscape

Rolling hills at World's End in Hingham, Mass. In 1945, this 251 acre property was short-listed to be the site of the United Nations headquarters, which ultimately found its home in New York City. Twenty years later it was eyed as a possible site for a nuclear power plant, but thanks to community opposition the site was preserved.

A Stately Tree

World's End was once an island at high tide, but colonial farmers dammed the salt marsh to grow hay and cleared almost all the trees for cropland. In the 1880s, wealthy businessman John Brewer built a farming estate. In 1890 he hired Frederick Law Olmstead to design a large subdivision; while the homes were never built, four miles of carriage roads remain.

Trees on a ridge line at World's End in Hingham. World's End is one of the 30 islands of the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreational Area. Unlike most National Parks, this park is administered by a partnership of national, state, and local representatives called the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership.
