Casino Jobs Now!

Construction companies, unions, and some workers staged a demonstration about a week and a half ago to apply pressure to the state to pass legislation for casinos in Massachusetts. Many states are struggling with budget shortfalls due to a combination of over spending, poor fiscal management and recession. Now any jobs project is cast with added urgency, even though the project may be of dubious benefit to the state, and its citizens.

Seen here are some of the demonstrators in front of the State House.

Marching for Jobs

Various unions marching for jobs Thursday night on Franklin Street. It was unexpected to see a march like this, but luckily I had my little camera with me to catch a few shots.

Tibet and the Beijing Olympics

There have been many news accounts the past few days with Tibetans protesting the Olympic Torch relay in cities around the world. You can see pictures from the New York Times here.

In honor of the Tibetans struggling for their freedom, I thought I would post another picture I took last month of a demonstration at the State House on the anniversary of the Tibetan uprising against China. See my previous post.

Tibetan Uprising Anniversary

March 10th marked the 49th anniversary of Tibetan National Uprising Day. The day when Tibetans took to the streets of their capital city, Lhasa, to protest China's invasion and occupation of their country. One week later the Dalai Lama was forced to flee to India. In the months following his escape, tens of thousands of Tibetans were killed as Chinese troops brutally crushed the uprising. You can read the report of the uprising by the Tibetan Government in Exile here.

The sign held by the demonstrators, partially obscured by the Tibetan flag reads, "China's record in Tibet: More that a million killed, more than 6,000 monasteries destroyed, thousands in prison. CHINA OUT OF TIBET!"
